Lunar New Year Calligraphy Workshop

Welcome the Year of the Horse with a special calligraphy workshop led by Jojo Liu! 

This class introduces the fundamentals of Chinese calligraphy, including brush techniques, stroke order, and the writing of auspicious New Year phrases. By the end of the workshop, participants will have created their own elegant calligraphy pieces to take home.

For Adults and older Teens, ages 15 and up. 

No registration; however space is limited to the first 25 participants

Taught by Jojo Liu of Jojo's Calligraphy.  Ms. Liu was taught and inspired by her grandfather to practice Chinese calligraphy from a young age. With her love and passion for creative arts, Ms. Liu adopted a modern twist to traditional Chinese calligraphy. Her work is the perfect balance of traditional calligraphy art with modern flare.

Library staff may take photos, videos, or audio recordings at our events. Please tell us if you do not wish to be photographed, video-recorded, or audio-recorded. We will always respect your requests!

Teacher Jojo Liu's grandfather inspired and taught her to practice Chinese calligraphy from a young age.  A current board member for the San Francisco Chinese Arts Association (舊金山中華藝術學會) as well as a member of the American Artist Association (美國藝術家協會), Jojo Liu's work was published in the 2018 San Francisco Chinese Arts Association Member Catalogue and in the 2019 Chinese American Artists in Los Angeles Member Catalogue. Materials will be provided and you will leave with an example of Chinese calligraphy.

Create beautiful calligraphy in Mandarin Chinese that celebrates the upcoming Lantern Festival! Instructor Jojo Liu, a lifelong calligraphic artist, will guide the class virtually and discuss the cultural significance of 'Shàngyuán jié', the Chinese Lantern Festival, which will take place on February 12th.

Six in-person seats and six virtual seats are available, with virtual attendees joining via Zoom. Supplies kits (brush, ink, calligraphy paper, etc.) will be available for all registrants to pick up at the circulation desk. All virtual participants will recieve the Zoom link via the email they used to register before the class begins.
